Adams, John - Early Dutch Engraving. Scarce Dutch portrait titled "Gezaut der Noord-Americasche Staaten in de Vereenigde Nederlanden," engraved by Reinier Vinkeles, most likely during the period 1777-82 when Adams was negotiating loans from the Dutch Republic. The first loan of 1777 was used to purchase critical supplies used in the Battle of Saratoga. Paper is 7¾x4-½"; image is 5½x3½".

Adams, John - Engraving by Hall After Copley. Full bust portrait of Adams as Vice President looking over his left shoulder directly at the viewer. Oval measures 4x3½" on a sheet measuring 5 5/8 x 5". Adams was Vice President from 1789 to 1797. John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) was a Boston-born American portait painter who moved to London in 1774 and was noted for his portraits of American notables.

(Hoover, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover). Extremely rare 1932 Christmas card from President and Mrs. Hoover, featuring dual 9¾" x 6½" photographs: President Hoover is pictured in the Rose Garden; Mrs. Hoover is shown at the end of the Spanish reflection pool with the First Pets, Weegie and Pat. Both have facsimile inscriptions and signatures. The President's says "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Herbert Hoover," and Mrs. Hoover's says, "And from Lou Henry Hoover and Weegie and Pat. 1932-3." The photos are by Harris & Ewing, Washington, and are in the original card holder, which is 12" x 15" open. Light toning; back of card holer is more toned.

According to Mary Seeley's definitive book Season's Greetings From The White House, the Hoovers sent a number of photographs with original inscriptions and signatures and encased them in a leather folder. We were unable to ascertain how many cards like the one offered here were sent out, but Mrs. Seeley assures us that this is, indeed, an extremely rare presidential Christmas card. The last one we know of sold about three years ago for $3200.

(Kennedy Assassination). Two keys to the limousine in which President Kennedy was riding when he was fatally shot. The keys come with a copy of a statement from R. Steven Turner, which reads: "This is an original set of keys to the presidential limousine (SS-100-X), that President John Kennedy rode in on November 22, 1963. I obtained them from the Secret Service motor pool, while I was a criminal investigator with the Dept. of Justice." Matted and framed with a photo of the limousine to an overall size of 17¼" x 14¼". Very fine.

(Kennedy, John and Jacqueline) - 1962 Christmas Gift Print. 14" x 17" print of the Red Room, from a painting by Edward Lehmann, with facsimile inscription and signatures by the President and First Lady. The gift print is mounted in a red folder with a gilt, embossed Presidential Seal on the cover. According to Mary Seeley's definitive book Season's Greetings In pristine condition, accompanied by the original Christmas wrapping paper. The artist presented Mrs. Kennedy with the original watercolor of the Red Room.

(Kennedy, John and Jacqueline) 1961 Official Christmas Card. Presidential Christmas card. designed by Hallmark for the White House: 6 7/8" x 5 7/8" white card stock with a 3½" wide green silk-screen border, bearing an embossed Presidential Seal and "Season's Greetings 1961" on the cover and the sentiment : "With wishes for a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year" inside, followed by secretarial signatures of President and Mrs. Kennedy. According to Mary Seeley's definitive book Season's Greetings From The White House, only 150 cards with this greeting were ordered, intended for heads of state with whom the Kennedys were acquainted. Another 800 cards were ordered with the same cover but with the sentiment: "The President and Mrs. Kennedy wish you a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year," and another 100 were ordered with no reference to Christmas. This card, one of 150, is in very good condition; there is some soiling to the cover and a 1" split at the bottom of the seam. A rare memento.

Lincoln, Garfield & McKinley Memorial Plate. Colorful memorial plate initiated by the assassination of President William McKinley in September of 1901. Central circular medallion with portraits of Lincoln and Garfield over that of McKinley, with flanking flags, and on a leaf green ground. Each portrait with inscribed name, while towards the base of the medallion, "Our Martyrs." Plate edged in a border resembling a vibrant viridian green. Plate in choice condition, with usual light craquelure, one tiny nick to the rim, and a 1/4" flake (well away from the colored areas) expertly filled. Diameter: 10-1/8".

(McKinley, William) - Portrait Campaign Ribbon. 2¼" x 1¾" photograph on a red ribbon with gilt lettering, c. 1896. At top: "Patriotism Protection Prosperity," and at bottom: "Wm. McKinley The Nations Choice." The ribbon was originally 5½" x 2¼" ribbon, but a ¾" x 1¼" piece is separated (but present) from the top, which has a vertical 1" tear between letters of the top two lines of text, not affecting the photo.

The Proclamation of Emancipation by Abraham Lincoln. 13" x 10" albumen photograph with a chest-length portrait of Lincoln in center oval, surrounded by cabinet members from his first administration; the text of the Emancipation Proclamation is behind Lincoln. Images of Union generals Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Thomas are in the corners. Mounted to original 16" x 13" cardstock. Engraved by D.T. Ames in 1863. Very good; minor edge blemishes to photo; mount is toned, with one edge break.

Taft, William H. 58" x 55" campaign tapestry (c. 1908) with W.H. Taft at center and surrounded by Rough Rider images, buffalo, dogs, etc. with guns and cowboy hats around the border. Taft was Teddy Roosevelt' s chosen successor and the tapestry represents Roosevelt's interests rather than Taft's. Very good; some pulls and faint discoloration.

"Washington and His Family" by Sartain. Large steel mezzotint engraving by William Sartain based on a painting by G. Schussele of Philadelphia, published by Bradley & Co., Philadelphia, 1864. Image measures 17½" x 24½". Overall moderate toning and a water stain in the right side of the print and margin. Several nail holes along outer edges of upper and lower margins, with minor paper loss, can be easily covered by framing. Washington dressed in his military uniform, sits at a large table with Martha, surrounded by her two grandchildren and with Washington's faithful slave, William Lee, in the background. On the table lies the plan for the city of Washington.

The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents - Executive Edition. Oversize volume, 20" x 16½", published by The Gravure Company of America, 1906. First published in 1901, this volume retains the original table of contents, which lists presidents Washington through McKinley, but includes President Theodore Roosevelt. The format is a 14½" x 9½" plate of each President with an opposing page of biography, written by a prominent personage, followed by two blank pages, on which documents of that President can be mounted. The leather covers are worn and scuffed; however, the huge 8¾" gilt Presidential Seal on the cover is intact; it is inscribed "The Presidents" along the lower edge. Navy silk inside cover and marbled first end page. The interior is lightly toned but otherwise fine. This copy was registered and numbered 3744 and allotted to Ezra Dixon Jr. on December 2, 1906 by J. O'Kane Rose. Rare.

"Gent. Grant & His Family" by John Sartain. Steel mezzotint engraving, published in 1868 by Bradley & Co., Philadelphia. Image measures 24" x 19". The print has been professionally conserved and is laid onto an acid-free backing. Some scuffing to legend; a few minor problems to edges of borders, and a 2" mended tear in tree-line at upper left margin. This print most likely played a role in Grant's 1868 presidential campaign.
